A Letter to My Father

Dear Dad,

I always think about you and how you tried to raise us to love both God and our country through the books that you gave and lined our shelves with, as well as the rich stories that you shared in our long drives to school.

I feel very personally invested in this coming national elections---aware of the gains that we could sustain and the consequences that we have to bear with the choices that we will make as a people. We have been oppressed in many ways and yet, we have been constantly given opportunities to regain our freedom. We cannot afford to bring back leaders whose characters have caused many of our problems in the country.

History has taught us that power-hungry dictators are not made overnight; they are created in time, out of a web of choices and our very own lack of vigilance.

I was born shortly before the EDSA Revolution in a UNDP-WHO
Compound in Jizan, a province in Saudi Arabia that was beside
the Red Sea. I lived there as a happy child until I was four years old.
I shall not be quiet then, dad.

Day after day, we come across a lot of good news. Our country has been performing well economically, gaining the respect of other countries. Our government has attracted some of the brightest women and men with integrity and passion to serve such that our programs are steadily lifting people out of poverty and providing opportunities for everyone, thereby making Filipinos more optimistic than ever despite the major crises that rocked our nations.

After six years of Daang Matuwid under the helm of President Aquino, we have sufficient reasons to believe that the Philippines is now in a perfect position for take-off. No more starting from scratch---as what we have kept on doing in the last 30 years since EDSA: We are well aware of the reforms that must be sustained and the imperfections of the Daang Matuwid that can be improved and corrected. The perfectly complementing tandem of Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo - both individuals with an exemplary record of competence, service and integrity - will help our country fly with developed nations in the next 12 years. By then, we will be the country that Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Heneral Luna, and the rest of our foreparents once dreamed of.

Hope filled me when I watched President Aquino's inaugural address back in 2010. At that time, I promised myself that I would take an active role in the campaign for the 2016 elections, which I did not expect to emerge as a battle between good and well, what we do not want for our selves.

I owe it to K----- and K-----, and all your future grandchildren to make sure that this happens.

Love always,
The daughter who took after you
